Events

Turing 2012 focuses on the notable contributions of Turing in today's society. Under the theme: The life and works of Alan Turing, the week-long celebration features several activities such as lectures, exhibits, and contests, among others. The week's highlight is a two-day international conference in the research areas Turing has influenced, namely: philosophy, artificial intelligence, computer science, gender studies, mathematics, biology, international relations, theory of computing, and psychology, to name a few.


Contest and exhibits

A poster making contest open to undergraduate students will be launched months before the start of the five-day Turing event. All entries from this contest will be exhibited for one whole week. Further, to highlight Turing's influence in computer science, a number of projects by students from the College of Computer Studies will also be showcased in a separate exhibit. Link

Conference

The conference will consist of plenary lectures and breakout sessions. Among the topics that will be covered include the singularity, artificial intelligence and consciousness; Internet crimes, code-breaking and cryptography; computer science, computing and cognitive science; LGBT issues, policies and legislation; cyberspace and the future of international relationsand others. Essay-writing contest

An essay-writing contest will be launched to gather the best student essays that focus on the theme: "The significance of Turing’s works in today’s context." Students with the best entries will be awarded during one of the events in the Turing celebration. The contest is open to undergraduate students. Link

Mini-lecture series

This event consists of introductory lectures on Turing's life and works. It will be open to undergraduate students and other interested individuals. Furthermore, depending on their availability, feature films and documentaries related to Turing will also be shown during the lectures.

Senior research colloquium 

To culminate the week-long Turing event, a number of undergraduate philosophy students will present their senior research papers in the areas of philosophy of mind, epistemology, ethics, existentialism, and metaphysics.
