As part of the week-long celebration of the life and works of Turing, the Department of Philosophy at De La Salle University-Manila will be holding a poster making contest and an essay-writing contest with the theme: “The significance of Turing’s works in today’s context." Both contests will be open to undergraduate students.

Who may join?

Any undergraduate student of De La Salle University-Manila who is at least enrolled for the second and third terms of AY 2011–12 may submit an entry.
  • Collaborative works are accepted. However, only 2 to 3 members are allowed per collaborative entry.
  • Students who wish to join should accomplishing a registration form available at the Department of Philosophy. Those interested also have an option of downloading the registration form online. Link

What are the guidelines?

The Department of Philosophy reserves the right to use all entries as publicity materials for its forthcoming lectures, activities, and events without prior notice given to the participants. However, the participants are still the rightful copyright owners of their posters and therefore due citations or credits will be accorded to them.
  • Participants are free to choose whatever medium (e.g., oil, watercolor, charcoal, color pencil, crayons, color pastels, dye).
  • Participants are highly discouraged to incorporate any copyrighted materials that are not properly cited in their submissions. These include photographs, magazine, or newspaper illustrations created by artists other than the participant/s.

What are the important dates?

Registration forms are available at the Department of Philosophy or through the respective philosophy teachers of the students. Below are the relevant dates for the poster making contest. Entries submitted beyond the deadline of submission will not be accepted.
  • February 13, 2012: Start of registration period
  • March 14, 2012: End of registration and deadline of entry submission
  • March 26 to 30, 2012: Exhibition of select entries
  • March 30, 2012: Announcement of winners

What are the criteria for judging?

Respected individuals in various fields such as arts, philosophy, and computer science, to name a few, will evaluate the posters based on the criteria specified below. The criteria of judging are as follows:
  • Creativity
  • Theme: How the entry manifests the theme or its ideas
  • Originality

What are the prizes?

For the poster making contest, the following prizes will be given:
  • Best Poster: Php3,000.00 plus certificate
  • People’s Choice Award: Certificate

Turing 2012: Essay-Writing Contest

The Department of Philosophy at De La Salle University-Manila will be holding an essay-writing contest with the theme: “The significance of Turing’s works in today’s context.” The contest is open to all undergraduate students of this institution. Note that essays submitted for this contest are informal or personal ones, which means that there is no need for bibliographies and text notes.

The deadline for submission of entries for this essay-writing contest will be on March 14, 2012. The author of the best essay will receive a cash prize of Php3,000.00. Kindly click the link to view the full contest mechanics. Link
